Abstract

This study explores how sustainable development can be integrated into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education in Indonesia through a blended learning approach, addressing the question of how Information and Communications Technology (ICT) can enhance sustainable EFL teaching. In the context of globalization, where English serves as a critical tool for international communication and collaboration, the research emphasizes the need for Indonesian EFL educators to embed sustainable development goals (SDGs) into their curricula to equip students with skills for real-world problem-solving. The study plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap in understanding sustainability within EFL education, particularly in developing nations like Indonesia, where awareness of sustainable development is limited among educators. Through a comprehensive library research method, the study synthesizes existing literature on sustainability, EFL instruction, and blended learning to propose a culturally relevant framework. Key findings highlight the potential of ICT-optimized blended learning to foster critical thinking, global communication, and cultural awareness among students, aligning with SDGs. The article discusses practical strategies, such as leveraging accessible technologies like WhatsApp and designing culturally sensitive learning management systems, to implement sustainable EFL education. The main outcome is a context-based, culturally appropriate blended learning framework that offers actionable recommendations for sustainable EFL practices, applicable in Indonesia and similar sociocultural contexts, with implications for enhancing educational equity and global competence.
