Leadership Communication and Cross Functional Collaboration Effectiveness in The Banking Industry: A Literature Review

Abstract

This study examines how leadership communication strategies influence the effectiveness of cross-functional team collaboration within the banking industry, particularly amid digital transformation. The main question addressed is how communication by leaders fosters coordination, trust, and shared goals across diverse functional units. Using a qualitative approach through a systematic literature review, this study analyzes 30 peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2018 and 2025, selected from databases such as Scopus, Emerald Insight, and ScienceDirect. The review identifies leadership communication as a pivotal mechanism in shaping team dynamics and sustaining organizational agility. Data synthesis reveals three key findings. First, transformational and participative communication enhances employee engagement and interdepartmental cooperation. Second, clarity and consistency of communication significantly improve alignment and reduce conflict within cross-functional teams. Third, empowering communication that encourages feedback and adaptive responses strengthens collaboration under digital change. The article discusses these themes by connecting leadership communication theory with organizational behavior and digital transformation frameworks. The findings highlight that effective communication strategies enable leaders to build trust, synchronize goals, and enhance collaborative performance across functions in dynamic banking environments.
